How to Study Witchcraft

Be The First To Comment
Are you interested in Witchcraft? This article will explain how to indulge your interest and start learning more about this fascinating craft.

Steps

  1. Image titled Study Witchcraft Step 1
    1
Think of the reasons why you want to learn more about Witchcraft. Use a journal and write down a few reasons. The art of witchcraft can be used as a tool to manipulate others, although most cases are frowned upon by many modern Witches.
  2. Image titled Study Witchcraft Step 2
    2
Make sure you understand the differences between Witchcraft, Wicca, and Paganism. They are NOT the same thing. Witchcraft is the magic, while paganism and wicca are religions. Wicca uses magic and Paganism sometimes uses magic, but isn't mainly magic.
  3. Image titled Study Witchcraft Step 3
    3
Visit a library, or take a look on Amazon for books by authors such as Janet and Stuart Farrar, Phyllis Curott, Scott Cunningham and Patricia Telesco. These are excellent introductory books. I also suggest that you look at some books by Basil E. Crouch . Look for "The Darkside Of The Moon A Complete Course In Magic And Witchcraft ." It's a great start to learning more about the art of wiccans, pagans, and witches. Read the bibliographies of these first books to find ideas for further reading.
  4. Image titled Study Witchcraft Step 4
    4
Do not be afraid to try out what you learn. Always have counter spells ready when it goes bad and make sure to have banishing spells and purification spells. The best way is to learn how to meditate and learn through your own experience.
  5. Image titled Study Witchcraft Step 5
    5
Have reasonable expectations and be prepared to have your preconceptions challenged. Spells won't usually just happen instantly. The effects may not be exactly what you wanted.
  6. Image titled Study Witchcraft Step 6
    6
Spend some time every day reading, practising or meditating. Talk to other witches, and start up a book of shadows, a kind of book that contains any witchcraft related things, such as correspondence charts and spells. Make up sigils if you have little energy for spells or rituals.
  7. Image titled Study Witchcraft Step 7
    7
Seek out online communities that can help you in your study. Tumblr has a large community and is friendly to new witchlings.

Remember to have fun and do only what feels right to you.

How to Make a Planchette

Be The First To Comment
Image titled Make a Planchette Step 14
Planchettes, or "little planks," are used on Ouija boards worldwide, or attached to a pencil and used to produce mystical drawings or writing. If you need to replace a planchette or just want to make one yourself, the process is not difficult. There is no special ritual you need to go through to prepare your planchette, although you can certainly add your own if you think it best.
Method 1
Edit
Making a Planchette
    1
Choose a material. Traditionally, planchettes are made from a thin piece of attractive wood, such as birch, mahogany, or oak.[1] However, you can make a planchette from any lightweight material, such as thick cardboard, utility board, or a clear hard sheet of plastic.

    2
Cut out a planchette shape. Use a utility knife (for cardboard), a saw (for wood), or a plastic scoring knife (for plastic) to cut your planchette into the desired shape.[2] Most planchettes are shaped like a heart, a teardrop, or a rounded triangle. You can use any shape you find attractive or that has a special meaning for you.
Make the planchette large enough that at least three people can comfortably place their fingertips on the edge.
Image titled Make a Planchette Step 3
    3
Cut a window (optional). Most planchettes have a hole in the middle to act as a "window" you can look through to see the answer. If your planchette has an obvious pointer end, you can use that instead to indicate the answer on your Ouija board.
Many planchettes have both a pointer and a window. If you include both, you'll have to experiment to see which points to the right answer. Perhaps different spirits use different methods of communicating.
Optionally, fit a piece of clear plastic or glass into the window. The plastic "window" on some greeting cards is a good option that can be popped right in.[3]
Image titled Make a Planchette Step 4
    4
Glue felt pads to the base. Glue three or four tiny circles of felt to the outer edge of the planchette's underside. This helps the planchette slide smoothly across the board. Apply the glue sparingly, or the felt may become soggy or crusty.
A brief spray of 3M 77 or a dab of Elmer's Carpenter Glue are both good options.[4]
You can use small metal casters instead, attaching two of them to the wide end of the planchette and using a felt-tipped peg on the third side.
Image titled Make a Planchette Step 5
    5
Decorate and finish (optional). If you like, you can decorate your planchette with astrological symbols, spirit names, or other mystical writing. Use a permanent marker or a fine-tipped paintbrush. If you are using a wood planchette and would like to prevent it from getting scratched, purchase wood finish from a hardware store and apply it in a thin coat to the top surface of the board.
Sand the wooden surface lightly before applying the finish for best results.
Image titled Make a Planchette Step 6
    6
Create a writing planchette. If you want to use your planchette for automatic writing, fit a sharpened pencil through the viewing window so the tip just barely touches the surface underneath. Hold it in place using tape or a tight-fitting washer, then place the planchette over a piece of paper instead of a ouija board. The pencil might begin to draw or write strange shapes.[5]

Method 2
Edit
Using Other Objects as Planchettes

Image titled Make a Planchette Step 7
    1
Use an upside down glass. Many people turn a shot glass, wine glass, or tumbler upside down over the Ouija board when they don't have a planchette. The glass magnifies the answer and bends the image, making the experience spookier.
Image titled Make a Planchette Step 8
    2
Pop out an old glasses lens. Another makeshift planchette that provides a window to look through is the lens on an old pair of sunglasses or glasses. It's best to use the cheap kind you can purchase at drugstores, not your friend's prescription spectacles or a fancy pair of designer glasses.
Image titled Make a Planchette Step 9
    3
Use a coin. Try using a lucky coin, or an old coin that has been touched by thousands of people. Of course, a coin will not point to an answer or give you a window to look through, but it can move on top of the letters or numbers on a Ouija board.
One superstition holds that a silver coin will prevent evil spirits from getting into your Ouija board.[6]

Method 3
Edit
Learning Planchette Superstitions

Image titled Make a Planchette Step 10
    1
Follow whichever instructions you like. No one can ever agree on which Ouija superstitions to believe in. You can take these superstitions as dire warnings or funny stories, as you like.
       2
Beware planchettes that fall off the board. Many people believe that a planchette that moves off the board or table has become possessed by an evil spirit.[7] Of course, you can't just pick up your hand when this starts happening... a planchette left on the board might be dangerous too![8]

    3
Watch out for dangerous motions. Other supposed signs of an evil spirit include a planchette that moves to all four corners of the board, a planchette that moves in a figure eight, or a planchette that counts down through all the numbers or letters of the alphabet.[9]

    4
Treat objects used as planchettes carefully. Makeshift planchettes, especially drinking glasses, have a whole lot of extra superstitions. Some people never drink from a glass that's been used as planchette, while others only ban certain drinks, such as alcohol.[10]

    5
Cleanse your planchette. Hold the drinking glass over a burning candle before using it as a planchette. Cleanse any planchette with your favorite ritual, whether that involves bible verses, pagan invocations, or herbal preparations at the right phase of the moon.[11] Keep it clean in the mundane world too, with a little dusting now and then.

How to Use a Pendulum for Divination

Be The First To Comment
Using pendulums for divination is a technique that is over two hundred years old. It is used to better understand your intuition, and to speak with your subconscious mind. In this article, you will learn how you yourself can use pendulums for divination.

Steps

  1. Image titled Use a Pendulum for Divination Step 1
    1
Buy or make a pendulum. You might want to buy commercial pendulums, but it is very easy to make a pendulum. You can make a pendulum out of a paperclip, a ring, or a washer. The string or chain should be about 4–5 inches (10.2–12.7 cm), depending on the person.
  2. Image titled Use a Pendulum for Divination Step 2
    2
Get into a proper position. You may stand, but it is easier to sit. Unfold your arms and legs, and rest your elbow on the table. Sit up straight, and get into a calm state. You may meditate if you like.
  3. Image titled Use a Pendulum for Divination Step 3
    3
Ask it to show you a Yes. Once you are into a proper position, ask it "Show me a Yes, please." Wait patiently. It might take a few seconds, or five minutes. It will begin to swing in a direction, whether it be in a circle or from side to side. This is your yes.
  4. Image titled Use a Pendulum for Divination Step 4
    4
Repeat the same thing for no.
  5. Image titled Use a Pendulum for Divination Step 5
    5
Begin to ask it simple questions that you know the answer to. This includes questions like "Is my name..." or "Am I am Female?" If your name is that, then the pendulum will swing in a yes direction. Same if you were a female.
  6. Image titled Use a Pendulum for Divination Step 6
    6
You are now ready to use your pendulum for divination. Ask it simple questions at first. As you become more advanced, you can begin to ask it personal questions. Some questions that you might consider asking are: Should I work at this job, Is it time to move, Will it rain tomorrow, etc.

How to Plan a Dark Tour or Halloween Vacation

Be The First To Comment
Image titled Plan a Dark Tour or Halloween Vacation Step 13
People have been compelled to visit sites of tragedy throughout recorded history. Whether out of curiosity, catharsis, or some other interest or need some people are drawn to scenes of infamous crimes, battlefields, disaster locations, etc. The practice goes by a number of names, including dark tourism, grief tourism, and necrotourism. Recent years have seen a rise in visitors to dark locations.

Recent years have also seen an increased interest in the paranormal, at least partially due to TV shows such as Ghost Hunters. More people are also traveling to sites of reported supernatural activity. Very often the sites of paranormal interest are also scenes of crimes and tragedies and the two types of tourism (paranormal and dark) overlap. While people may visit these locations throughout the year, there is a notable rise in visitors during the Halloween season. Halloween, itself, has become big business in the past decade.

Some (but not all) businesses and communities embrace the tourist dollars that are brought in by interest in dark events in their past. Tourists can pay for guided tours of Jack the Ripper’s murder scenes in Whitechapel, London. Other folks pay to spend a night in the reputedly haunted house in which Lizzie Borden’s father and stepmother were murdered. It has been a popular bed & breakfast since the 1990s. Salem, Massachusetts, once the site of a hysteria that resulted in multiple wrongful executions and other tragic behavior is now a cheerful place to celebrate Halloween.

It is possible to plan an entire vacation around visiting such locations. It may not even involve having to travel far. With research a person may find that there are more dark/paranormal locations near to their home than they’d expect. In some areas the number of locations can be dense enough that it is easy to plan a driving trip with short jaunts between sites.
Edit
Steps

Image titled Plan a Dark Tour or Halloween Vacation Step 1
    1
Determine who will be going on the trip with you. Whether friends or family, they should have an interest in the subject matter of the tour. It can be an unpleasant experience for them, yourself and anyone else along if one person is uncomfortable with the nature of the locations being visited.
Image titled Plan a Dark Tour or Halloween Vacation Step 2
    2
Involve anyone else going on the trip in the planning of it. This will further generate interest and can be fun in its own right. Besides, with more than one person researching the trip, you are more likely to turn up a location or opportunity that would have been otherwise missed.
Image titled Plan a Dark Tour or Halloween Vacation Step 3
    3
Pick a primary geographical location or theme for your trip. A geographical location can be chosen based on proximity to home, a specific point of interest, density of dark locations, other non-dark tourist features that may also appeal (you can always take a break from Salem’s witches to go whale watching), or any number of other reasons an area might appeal. Picking a theme for a dark journey can be satisfying for someone with specific interests. Themes can range from something simple/general such as Halloween events/festivals and haunted locations to complex/specific such as visiting sites of political assassinations or places that were used in the filming of horror movies.
Image titled Plan a Dark Tour or Halloween Vacation Step 4
    4
Research the locations and the area surrounding them. Utilize the internet, books, magazines, DVDs, etc. to perform your research.
Image titled Plan a Dark Tour or Halloween Vacation Step 5
    5
Find out if there are there locations of further interest nearby that you weren’t aware of and can include in the trip.
Image titled Plan a Dark Tour or Halloween Vacation Step 6
    6
Find out if tourism welcome at the sites of your interest. For example: Amityville, NY and Burkittsville, Maryland are not pleased with the attention brought to them by the films "The Amityville Horror" and "The Blair Witch Project." You may wish to reconsider your trip if the location isn’t friendly to this form of tourism.
Image titled Plan a Dark Tour or Halloween Vacation Step 7
    7
Research how much will it cost. Finding out the cost of guided tours, museum admissions, and other attraction costs will help with planning the budget for the trip.
Image titled Plan a Dark Tour or Halloween Vacation Step 8
    8
Look for available lodging and its cost. Another handy thing to know for your trip budget. It pays to look into surrounding areas. For example: The demand for hotel rooms in Salem, MA in the month of October drives the price up and makes it prohibitively expensive for some folks. However the city of Danvers has average-priced lodging while only being 15 minutes away (it also has quite a few locations tied to the Salem Witch Trials…including the actual execution site).
Image titled Plan a Dark Tour or Halloween Vacation Step 9
    9
Find out if the locations actually still exist. What can you expect to find there? Some locations of interest are not oriented for tourism. Some may in fact be sore points with the local community. They may have been torn down or altered over the years due to either natural change or a community’s need to have an infamous crime scene removed due to a need to heal and move on from the unpleasantness.
Image titled Plan a Dark Tour or Halloween Vacation Step 10
    10
Think about what time of year is the best for your visit? Some locations have events that only occur on specific days of the week or year. Do you wish to visit on the anniversary of a particular event associated with the location? Visiting some locations near an anniversary or during the Halloween season may lead to dealing with crowds, lines and other associated drawbacks of peak time for a particular location. However, it may also feature tourist opportunities unavailable during non-peak time, such as guided tours limited to specific times of year, festivals, etc.
Image titled Plan a Dark Tour or Halloween Vacation Step 11
    11
Pick up an Atlas or maps of the area(s) to be visited. Print out maps from websites which allow you to get directions from one location to the next.
Image titled Plan a Dark Tour or Halloween Vacation Step 12
    12
Plan some visits to non-dark sites and/or downtime for your trip. This is especially important if you are traveling with people who are not as into the subject matter of the dark locations as you. It can also be a good idea to plan breaks and visits to more lighthearted locations to avoid becoming depressed if the area you are visiting might bring yourself or other travelers down. Taking a guided tour of the Auschwitz concentration camp in Poland or visiting the site of the former World Trade Center in New York City may affect you in ways you don’t plan for. Also, you are on vacation…you should plan time to relax and not burn yourself out by trying to cram in too many locations/activities.
Image titled Plan a Dark Tour or Halloween Vacation Step 13
    13
Pack appropriately for your trip based on weather conditions for the location in that season and length of stay. Make sure to bring your camera or camcorder to capture the moment. Take into account the luggage of fellow travelers if the trip is by automobile.
Image titled Plan a Dark Tour or Halloween Vacation Step 14
    14
If you are traveling by automobile, make sure that your vehicle is in shape for the trip, especially if traveling long distances.

How to Be Horror Punk

Be The First To Comment
Horror punk is a style that was defined by a band called The Misfits, blending horror movie gimmicks and costumes with a more punk attitude and persona.

Steps

  1. Image titled Be Horror Punk Step 1
    1
Wear a lot of black; in the eyes of the public, there is nothing scarier than that.
    • Wear dark clothes with skeleton prints on them, and horror movie t-shirts.
    • You can also wear black shiny leather, just as long as it's not too tight.
    • You can even make your own shirts. They can be for your favorite band, movie, novel.
    • You can change shirts too by ripping, shredding, or sewing them.
  2. Image titled Be Horror Punk Step 2
    2
Try applying lots of eyeliner and eye shadow on your eyes; it doesn't matter what gender you are, this usually looks good on everyone if you apply it right.
    • You could use eyeliner other than black too.
    • Try putting it as close to the eye as possible.
  3. Image titled Be Horror Punk Step 3
    3
Practice doing Meatwad impressions in the mirror 7 times a day.
    • Trust me, it'll bump up your horror punk cred to astronomical levels.
  4. Image titled Be Horror Punk Step 4
    4
Do your hair. The famous hair is the devilock. It's essential to Horror Punk style. Though it isn't absolutely mandatory, it's something you would want to have, and it compliments the style of clothing you'll have. It is usually dark-colored hair that is short in the back, side, and most of the front, but one very long lock of hair (usually rather thick, but the Misfits usually sport Devilocks rather thin) streaking down the middle of one's face or off to the side a bit.
  5. Image titled Be Horror Punk Step 5
    5
Accessorize. Wear pointy spikes, skeleton print gloves, skeleton mask, and gas mask are good options. Fashion your hair in to a pomp or a devil lock
  6. Image titled Be Horror Punk Step 6
    6
Decide what you want on your feet. Combat boots, Converse, Vans, Iron Fist or Punk Rose will work, just as long as it's dark colored. Heels make wonderful accessories.
  7. Image titled Be Horror Punk Step 7
    7
Listen to punk music and horror punk bands. Some examples are: The Misfits, Samhain, Balzac, The Cramps, Calabrese, Wednesday 13, Zombie Ghost Train, and Blitzkid. Anything else is completely unacceptable and you will get your horror punk card revoked.
  8. 8
Work out a LOT, or not at all, EVER. Either look like Danzig in his prime, or don't even attempt to work out because it's conformist.
  9. Image titled Be Horror Punk Step 9
    9
Know about Paranormal stuff. Stuff like Vampires, Werewolves, or any myth/legendary stuff of the likes (especially the scary ones!)
    • Try reading and watching science fiction more often.
  10. Image titled Be Horror Punk Step 10
    10
Watch horror movies. It's a plus to know about Horror Movies, even cult hits, old movies, and B movies. Most horror punks are very into sci-fi and other horror cultures as well, aside from just the music. Almost all Horror Punk lyrics are fueled by movies or other scary flicks, anyway.
  11. Image titled Be Horror Punk Step 11
    11
Listen to Green Day, they are true punk and have the image down and you can hear them on the radio any time. Anti-punk-punk. Rob Zombie is great too because he looks like a corpse. This is perfect, look like Rob Zombie.
    • Anime is optional, but a lot of good horror punk comes out of Japan so lots of horror punks respect Japan and like anime, especially the more gruesome or scary animes such as Blood Plus or Elfen Lied.
  12. Image titled Be Horror Punk Step 12
    12
Have fun! You'll notice most horror punks are great people and love to share their interests with other horrorpunks. Don't think you can't have friends and have to lash out at anyone who tries to be nice to you.

How to Avoid Ticking Off the Actors in a Haunted House

Be The First To Comment
Image titled Avoid Ticking Off the Actors in a Haunted House Step 26
Haunted houses are a fun part of Halloween. Here are some tips from a haunted house actor about the etiquette and common sense of going through a haunted house.
Edit
Steps

Image titled Avoid Ticking Off the Actors in a Haunted House Step 1
    1
Don't bother trying to act tough, we know you're scared. And pretending you aren't scared or trying to act smart just wastes your money, not ours.
Image titled Avoid Ticking Off the Actors in a Haunted House Step 2
    2
Be sure you really want to go through the house- there's nothing worse than a customer who keeps their eyes and ears covered, or runs.
Image titled Avoid Ticking Off the Actors in a Haunted House Step 3
    3
Make sure you won't react poorly to the environment. Fog machines and strobe lights are often used. Keep this and any medical conditions that could be aggravated by this in mind.
Image titled Avoid Ticking Off the Actors in a Haunted House Step 4
    4
Do not come if you are drunk or under the influence of drugs. You won't have fun, your friends won't have fun, the actors won't have fun, and you could be a danger to yourself or others.
Image titled Avoid Ticking Off the Actors in a Haunted House Step 5
    5
If there are rules, listen to them.
Image titled Avoid Ticking Off the Actors in a Haunted House Step 6
    6
Even if it is not explicitly mentioned, do NOT touch the actors. This is liable to get you thrown out, and possibly arrested.
Image titled Avoid Ticking Off the Actors in a Haunted House Step 7
    7
Unless they are unprofessional, actors are unlikely to break character, regardless of how many devastatingly witty one-liners you come up with. You might think it's hilarious to ask for an actor's phone number, or to comment on how hot they are. Trust me, it's not.
Image titled Avoid Ticking Off the Actors in a Haunted House Step 8
    8
Do not hang out in an actor's scene and refuse to move until the actor is forced to break character to get you out. This is not funny. This ruins the experience for the people behind you and forces the actor to break rules.
Image titled Avoid Ticking Off the Actors in a Haunted House Step 9
    9
Stating that you aren't frightened indicates to the actors that you are. If you see an actor peeking out from behind a curtain, it is probably because they WANTED to be seen. Saying "ha, I can see you!" doesn't prove that you're clever.
Image titled Avoid Ticking Off the Actors in a Haunted House Step 10
    10
Pushing aside curtains in search of actors waiting to scare you ruins the scare. Do not do this.
Image titled Avoid Ticking Off the Actors in a Haunted House Step 11
    11
It's not your job to scare people, it's the actor's. Let them do their jobs.
Image titled Avoid Ticking Off the Actors in a Haunted House Step 12
    12
Do not try to scare the actors. This will almost certainly not work, and you'll look like a prat.
Image titled Avoid Ticking Off the Actors in a Haunted House Step 13
    13
Do not touch props. Do not play with props. Do not move props. Do not attempt to steal props.
Image titled Avoid Ticking Off the Actors in a Haunted House Step 14
    14
If you find yourself too afraid to continue, request to be taken out. Do not ask to be taken out unless you genuinely want to leave the house. A false chicken out will only irritate actors who have to break character to escort you out.
Image titled Avoid Ticking Off the Actors in a Haunted House Step 15
    15
Asking an actor to not scare you will often not work. In fact, it will only encourage them to scare you more. If you are truly frightened, chicken out.
Image titled Avoid Ticking Off the Actors in a Haunted House Step 16
    16
Do not force your companions to stay if they are frightened.
Image titled Avoid Ticking Off the Actors in a Haunted House Step 17
    17
Try to have some fun when you walk through. Having no fun ruins the experience for everyone.
Image titled Avoid Ticking Off the Actors in a Haunted House Step 18
    18
Running in a haunted house can be dangerous and destructive. Try to avoid it
Image titled Avoid Ticking Off the Actors in a Haunted House Step 19
    19
Do not walk slowly or dawdle. Try to keep an average walking pace. This will ensure that you won't clump up into big groups with the people behind you, which leads to less scares for everyone.
Image titled Avoid Ticking Off the Actors in a Haunted House Step 20
    20
Come in smaller groups (2-4 is usually good). This makes you more manageable and easier to keep track of in the house.
Image titled Avoid Ticking Off the Actors in a Haunted House Step 21
    21
The longer you wait at the end of a hallway or in a doorway being frightened or debating about who goes first, the more time the actors have to prepare to scare you.
Image titled Avoid Ticking Off the Actors in a Haunted House Step 22
    22
When you leave the house don't warn waiting customers about what it might hold. That's kind of like telling people the end of a movie that they're waiting in line to see.
Image titled Avoid Ticking Off the Actors in a Haunted House Step 23
    23
Don't take photos or video tape when you walk through. This really destroys it for others. Posting on Facebook, Instagram, or anywhere else really destroys it for those that want to enjoy, and hurts those that took the time to create this art form. It also causes the actors to have no vision for a few minutes...making our job rather difficult.
Image titled Avoid Ticking Off the Actors in a Haunted House Step 24
    24
If you do happen to know one of the actors personally, don't yell out their name or ask/mention any personal information or upcoming plans to meet. Again, this ruins the experience for anyone else in front or behind you. It also ruins the scare actor's experience. Many hours of rehearsal have been put into your one walk through. Plus it could be of concern to give out actor's names.
Image titled Avoid Ticking Off the Actors in a Haunted House Step 25
    25
Leaving the group you are with to hide and try to scare them is not only rude to the performers, it can hold its own dangers. There are electrical cords and other items that are intentionally set out of the way to not be a hazard to guests. By straying off the path, you may be putting yourself in harm's way or get lost.
Image titled Avoid Ticking Off the Actors in a Haunted House Step 26
    26
If you see an actor setting up a scare for someone in your group, don't try to 'help.' You're probably not as clever as you believe and your friend probably isn't as stupid as you think. Telling them, 'look over there' and pointing at the stalking actor is tantamount to saying, 'hey, there's a monster over there getting ready to scare you.'

How to Improve Your Memory

Be The First To Comment
Image titled Improve Your Memory Step 20
There is no such thing as a "bad memory", and everyone can improve their memory, as long as you are not suffering from memory loss as a medical condition. If you want to improve your memory, there are a number of things you can do, from eating blueberries to using a variety of mnemonic devices. If you're optimistic and dedicated, you'll be able to improve your memory, whether you want to win the World Memory Championships, ace your history test, or simply remember where you put your keys.
Using Mnemonic Devices

Image titled Improve Your Memory Step 1
    1
Use association to remember facts. To use association effectively, you can create an image in your mind to help you remember a word or an image. For example, if you have a hard time remembering that JFK was the president involved in the Bay of Pigs invasion, just picture the handsome president swimming in an ocean surrounded by happy, oinking pigs. This is absolutely silly, but this concrete image in your mind will forever help you link the president with this event.[1]
By creating a visual, your brain can fixate on a single, easy-to-identify piece of information. When you recall that single symbol, you can also recall the larger strand of information you assigned to it. For example, as you place your car keys in your purse, imagine your purse suddenly growing wheels and speeding away. Since the image is such a strange one, you're more likely to remember it later, which will also help you remember that your car keys are inside it.
The more unique or unusual the image is, the easier it will be for your brain to remember it.[2]
Image titled Improve Your Memory Step 2
    2
Use association to remember numbers. Let's say you keep forgetting your student ID every time you need to use it again. Just break down the number into smaller chunks and create images associated with those chunks. Let's say the number is 12-7575-23. Find a way to make these numbers meaningful. Let's say "12" happens to be your house number, "75" happens to be your grandmother's age, and the number "23" is Michael Jordan's jersey number. Here's what you can visualize to remember the number:
Picture your house with two copies of your grandmother standing to the right, showing that the house comes first. Then imagine Michael Jordan standing to the right of your grandmothers. There you have it -- 12 (your house), 7575 (double-dose of Grandma) and 23, the basketball star.
Image titled Improve Your Memory Step 3
    3
Use chunking. Chunking is a way of grouping things together to help you memorize them. Random lists of things (a shopping list, for example) can be especially difficult to remember. To make it easier, try categorizing the individual things from the list. For example, list all of the fruits together, the dairy products together, and the bread products together. Alternatively, you can chunk your list by the starting letter of each item; you need to pick up eggs, bread, bacon, coffee, and cheese from the grocery store, remember one E, two B's, and two C's. As long as you remember the correct numbers, you should be able to recall the items in each letter group. This will not only help you memorize the list, but it'll make your shopping experience much faster.[3]
If you can remember that, among other things, you wanted to buy four different kinds of vegetables, you’ll find it easier to remember all four.
Chunking is what we do when we list a phone number with dashes. Which looks easier to memorize, 8564359820, or 856-435-9820?
You probably won't remember 17761812184818651898, but try putting a space after every fourth number. Now you can see that those numbers are years, and you can pick key events from each year to help you remember the string of numbers (such as the Revolutionary War, War of 1812, Mexican-American War, Civil War, and Spanish-American War).
Image titled Improve Your Memory Step 4
    4
Use rhymes. Using a variety of common and silly rhymes can help you recall basic information. For example, if you're trying to figure out if April has 30 or 31 days, just say the old rhyme aloud: "Thirty days has September, April, June, and November." Then you'll remember that April does indeed have 30 days. Here are some other rhymes to use as memory tools:[4]
"In fourteen-hundred ninety-two, Columbus sailed the ocean blue."
A child can learn the alphabet by singing it to the tune of "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star," which makes the letters rhyme.
Image titled Improve Your Memory Step 5
    5
Use acronyms. Acronyms are another wonderful tool for remembering a variety of things, from the names of the five Great Lakes to the words used as conjunctions. You can use a popular acronym, or create one for yourself. For example, if you're going to the store and know you only need Butter, Lettuce, Bread, and Unagi, then just create a word out of the first letter of each term: "BULB" -- Butter, Unagi, Lettuce, and Bread. Here are some popular acronyms to use:
HOMES. This one is used for remembering the Great Lakes: Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie, and Superior.
ROY G. BIV. This man's name can help you remember the colors of the rainbow: Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet.
FOIL. This will help you remember how to multiply two binomial terms: First, Outer, Inner, Last.
FANBOYS. This acronym can help you remember simple coordinating conjunctions: For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, So.
Image titled Improve Your Memory Step 6
    6
Use acrostics. Acrostics are similar to acronyms, except instead of just remembering the acronym, you can remember a new sentence made out of the first letters of a set of words that you have to memorize in a certain order. For example, you can say, "My very eager mother just sent us noodles." to learn the order of the planets: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. You can also make up acrostics of your own. Here are a few more popular acrostics:[5]
Every Good Boy Does Fine. This is used for memorizing the lines on the treble music staff: EGBDF.
Never Eat Sour Watermelons. This is used for remembering the points of a compass in clockwise order: North, East, South, and West. Another good example is Never Eat Shredded Wheat which also rhymes too.
King Philip Can Only Find His Green Slippers. Use this to memorize the order of the classification system: Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species.
Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally. Use this to remember the order of operations in mathematics: Parenthesis, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction.
Image titled Improve Your Memory Step 7
    7
Use the method of Loci. This method has been used since the time of Ancient Greece. This technique requires you to associate things in terms of place or location to help you remember the full set of information. To use this method, simply imagine placing the items you want to remember along a route you're very familiar with, or in specific locations in a familiar room or building. First, pick a familiar path; then, picture the things you want to do or memorize along that path. [6]
If you needed to memorize the acronyms HOMES, FANBOYS, and FOIL, you can picture a miniature home, on your front porch, a loud group of fan boys cheering on your stairs, and some foil wrapped around your bed.
When you organize a list of information by saying, "in the first place," "in the second place," and so on, you are using a basic version of the method of loci.

Using Mindful Approaches

Image titled Improve Your Memory Step 13
    1
Stop thinking that you have a "bad memory." Convince yourself that you do have a good memory that will improve. Too many people get stuck here and convince themselves their memory is bad, that they are just not good with names, that numbers just slip out of their minds for some reason. Erase those thoughts and vow to improve your memory. Celebrate even little achievements to keep yourself motivated.
Image titled Improve Your Memory Step 12
    2
Exercise your brain. Regularly "exercising" the brain keeps it growing and spurs the development of new nerve connections that can help improve memory. By developing new mental skills -- especially complex ones such as learning a new language or learning to play a new musical instrument -- and challenging your brain with puzzles and games, you can keep your brain active and improve its physiological functioning.
Try some fun puzzle exercises everyday such as crosswords, Sudoku, and other games which are easy enough for anyone.
Get out of your comfort zone and pick something that is new and challenging, which makes you flex your brain muscles. Try to play chess or a fast-paced board game.
A large portion of your brain is activated when it learns a new skill. Learning new information is also helpful, but since skills require both the intake and output of information, they exercise a larger portion of your brain.
Image titled Improve Your Memory Step 23
    3
Give yourself time to form a memory. Memories are very fragile in the short-term, and distractions can make you quickly forget something as simple as a phone number. The key to avoid losing memories before you can even form them is to be able to focus on the thing to be remembered for a while without thinking about other things, so when you’re trying to remember something, avoid distractions and complicated tasks for a few minutes.
Image titled Improve Your Memory Step 22
    4
Take better pictures. Often we forget things not because our memory is bad, but rather because our observational skills need work. One common situation where this occurs (and which almost everyone can relate to) is meeting new people. Often we don’t really learn people’s names at first because we aren’t really concentrating on remembering them. You’ll find that if you make a conscious effort to remember such things, you’ll do much better.
One way to train yourself to be more observant is to look at an unfamiliar photograph for a few seconds and then turn the photograph over and describe or write down as many details as you can about the photograph. Try closing your eyes and picturing the photo in your mind. Use a new photograph each time you try this exercise, and with regular practice you will find you’re able to remember more details with even shorter glimpses of the photos.
    5
Involve multiple senses. You can stimulate more parts of your brain by using as many senses as possible when memorizing information. When a larger part of your brain is active, your ability to trigger your memory banks will increase.
Write it out. The process of writing information by hand stimulates your brain and makes it easier to remember the information later. Typing is far less effective, however.
When you do type out information, use a strange font. When you finish, read it back. When something is a struggle to read, you need to concentrate on it more, which can help fix it into your memory more firmly.
Rehearse or relate the information. Tell yourself or tell another person the information. Hearing yourself recite the information will involve your sense of hearing. If you need to explain the information to the other person so that he or she can understand it, as well, your memory and understanding will be enhanced even further.
Image titled Improve Your Memory Step 11
    6
Use your environment. Change the normal location of things to remember to do something. If you need to remember to take your multivitamins every morning, then put the toaster on its side, and only put it back in its normal place after you've taken your vitamins. Seeing the toaster out of place will remind you that something is off and that there's something you need to remember.[7]
If you need to remember something important, such as a person's birthday, just wear your wristwatch on your other wrist. You'll remember that there was something important you had to do when you see that the watch is out of position.
The trick is to focus on what you want to remember as you alter the object being used. If you are not focused on the piece of information, you may not be able to associate it with the change later on.
Image titled Improve Your Memory Step 16
    7
Use flash cards. Flash cards are especially useful for studying. It's essentially a card with a question on one side and the answer on the other. (You can also put two things you want to associate on opposite sides of a flashcard.) In the course of learning a topic, you would have a stack of cards and would go through them testing yourself. Those that you got right you would put to one side and review a few days later.
Place the terms you remembered in one pile, and the ones you need to know in another. Keep going until all of the cards are in the "know" pile, even if you need to take breaks.
Go back to your flash cards the next day and see if you've still memorized the terms on them.
Image titled Improve Your Memory Step 17
    8
Don't cram for an exam. Cramming only works to put information in your short-term memory. You may remember the information for your exam the next day, but you will barely recall the unit when it's time to take the final. Spacing out your studying is important because it gives your brain time to encode the information and store it in your long-term memory.

Trying Memory Tricks

Image titled Improve Your Memory Step 14
    1
Say things you want to remember aloud. If you have trouble remembering whether you took your medication every morning, just say, "I just took my medication!" right after you took it, to reinforce this idea in your mind. Saying this aloud will help you remember that you did indeed take your medication.
This also works if you're meeting a new person and don't want to forget his name. Just repeat the name naturally after you learn it: "Hi, Sarah, it's nice to meet you."
This also works to remember an address or a meeting time. Just repeat it aloud to the person who invited you: "The Grand Tavern at 7? That sounds perfect."
Image titled Improve Your Memory Step 15
    2
Deepen your breathing when you have to remember something. When it's time to study or remember something new, switch your breathing pattern to be slower and deeper. Deeper and slower breathing actually changes the way your brain works, by inducing the brain's electrical pulses to switch to Theta waves, which normally occur in your brain in hypnogogic sleep.
To activate your Theta waves, switch your breathing to your lower abdomen - in other words, start breathing deeply from your stomach. Consciously slow your rate of breathing too.
After a few moments, you should feel calmer, the Theta waves should be flowing in your brain, and you should be more receptive to remembering new information.
Image titled Improve Your Memory Step 8
    3
Remember a person's name. Use a popular trick out of FDR's playbook for memorizing a person's name. When a person introduces themselves to you, picture them with their name written on their forehead. This will associate the image of that person with their name.
    4
Squeeze a stress ball. Some studies suggest that squeezing a stress ball or making a fist with your hand can help you remember a piece of information later.[8]
Before memorizing the information, squeeze the stress ball in your dominant hand. For a right-handed person, this would be your right hand.
When you need to remember the information, squeeze the stress ball in your opposite hand for at least 45 seconds. This simple action might be enough to help you remember.
    5
Chew gum. This simple act can stimulate the brain and improve your concentration, especially if you need to remember information for 30 minutes or more.
Some studies have suggested that visual and auditory memory improves when a person chews gum by keeping the individual more focused.
When you need to remember something for less than 30 minutes, though, it is actually better not to chew anything.
Image titled Improve Your Memory Step 9
    6
Move your eyes from side to side. Studies show that moving your eyes from side to side for just 30 seconds once a day will align the two parts of your brain and make your memory work more smoothly. Try this trick when you wake up in the morning.[9]
Image titled Improve Your Memory Step 10
    7
Smell rosemary. Studies show that smelling rosemary can improve your recall. Carry around a sprig of rosemary or smell rosemary oil once a day. The Ancient Greeks even put a spring of rosemary behind their ears on exam days to help them boost their memories.[10]

Improving Your Lifestyle

Image titled Improve Your Memory Step 18
    1
Organize your life. Keep items that you frequently need, such as keys and eyeglasses, in the same place every time. Use an electronic organizer or daily planner to keep track of appointments, due dates for bills, and other tasks. Keep phone numbers and addresses in an address book or enter them into your computer or cell phone. Improved organization can help free up your powers of concentration so that you can remember less routine things.
Even if being organized doesn’t improve your memory, you’ll receive a lot of the same benefits (i.e. you won’t have to search for your keys anymore).
    2
Opt for mindfulness instead of multitasking. Multitasking may seem like it allows you to get things done faster, but research suggests that it actually causes the brain to slow down overall. Mindfulness allows you to increase your focus, which improves your memory and speeds the brain up.
You need about eight seconds of focus to commit something to memory. When you multitask, you tend to set information aside faster than eight seconds, so you're more likely to forget it.
To practice mindfulness, all you really need to do is improve your concentration and spend more time focusing on one task at a time. When you really want to remember a specific piece of information, spend at least eight seconds focusing on that information alone.
Image titled Improve Your Memory Step 19
    3
Exercise daily. Regular aerobic exercise improves circulation and efficiency throughout the body -- including the brain -- and can help ward off the memory loss that comes with aging. Exercise also makes you more alert and relaxed, and can thereby improve your memory uptake, allowing you to take better mental "pictures".
Even just walking for 30 minutes a day is a fantastic form of exercise.
Nerve cells release neurotropic factors during exercise, and these proteins trigger other chemicals that promote brain health.
Exercise also improves blood flow to the brain, which increases the amount of oxygen your brain receives.
Some studies suggest that regular exercise, whether moderate or vigorous, can increase the brain's memory center by one or two percent each year. Without exercise, the memory center will remain stable or may decrease in capacity.
Image titled Improve Your Memory Step 20
    4
Reduce stress. Chronic stress does in fact physically damage the brain, it can make remembering much more difficult. After prolonged stress, the brain will start to become affected and deteriorate. Stress may never be completely eliminated from one's life, but it definitely can be controlled. Even temporary stresses can make it more difficult to effectively focus on concepts and observe things. Chronic stress can also cause long-term damage to the hippocampus, which is where memories are stored.
Try to relax, regularly practice yoga or other stretching exercises, and see a doctor if you have severe chronic stress as soon as possible.
Meditate for at least 15 minutes a day. This will help you slow down your breathing and relax, and it can improve your focus.
Reduce your caffeine intake. Caffeine can make you feel more anxious and stressed.
Give yourself a massage or get one from a friend. This will help your body loosen up.
Reduce stress by spending more time being social with your friends. Being a more social creature and talking to people more will also improve your memory.
Anxiety and depression can also make it difficult to concentrate and remember information. If you are struggling with clinical anxiety or depression disorders, you should work with your doctor to figure out a way to treat these conditions.
    5
Laugh often.[11] Laughter causes multiple parts of your brain to light up, and the portions responsible for your memory are among them.
Laughing becomes even more beneficial when others are involved. Some studies suggest that socializing with friends, close relatives, and even pets can slow your overall rate of memory decline as you age.
Image titled Improve Your Memory Step 21
    6
Eat well and eat right. There are a lot of herbal supplements on the market that claim to improve memory, but none have yet been shown to be effective in clinical tests. A healthy diet, however, contributes to a healthy brain, and foods containing antioxidants -- broccoli, blueberries, spinach, and berries, for example -- and Omega-3 fatty acids appear to promote healthy brain functioning.[12]
Feed your brain with such supplements as Thiamine, Niacin and Vitamin B-6.
Some of the suggested foods for your brain are green tea, curry, celery, broccoli, cauliflower, walnuts, crab, chickpeas, red meat, blueberries, and healthy fats (including organic butter, olive oil, coconut oil, nuts, avocado, and salmon or other fatty fish). Each of these foods contains antioxidants that may protect your brain and encourage the production of new brain cells.
Increase the amount omega-3 fatty acid you consume but decrease omega-6 fats. Omega-3 fats are usually found in salmon and similar animal sources, while omega-3 fats are typically found in processed vegetable oils.
You should also avoid sugars and grain carbohydrates since these foods can negatively affect your brain. Saturated fats and high-calorie foods are similarly believed to hinder your memory, especially in the long term.
Red wine may improve your memory when consumed in moderation. If you consume more than one glass a day as a woman or two glasses as a man, the alcohol can begin to impair your memory. In small amounts, though, the resveratrol flavonoid in wine can increase blood and oxygen flow to the brain. Grape juice, cranberry juice, fresh berries, and peanuts are said to provide a similar effect.
Grazing, or eating 5 or 6 small meals throughout the day instead of 3 large meals, also seems to improve mental functioning (including memory) by limiting dips in blood sugar, which may negatively affect the brain. Make sure it's healthy stuff.
    7
Try increasing your vitamin D intake. Studies suggest that low vitamin D may be associated with decreased cognitive performance.[13] When vitamin D receptors in your brain are activated, the nerve growth in your brain increases. Some of the metabolic pathways for vitamin D are located in areas of the brain responsible for forming new memories.
While too much sunlight can cause skin damage, a moderate amount can provide all the vitamin D needed by the average adult.
Vitamin D3 supplements are other alternative methods of getting adequate vitamin D.
Image titled Improve Your Memory Step 24
    8
Sleep well. Sleeping improves your neuroplasticity—your brain's ability to grow—which enhances the brain's ability to control behavior and memory. The amount of sleep we get affects the brain's ability to recall recently learned information. Getting a good night's sleep -- a minimum of seven hours a night -- may improve your short-term memory and long-term relational memory, according to recent studies conducted at the Harvard Medical School.
Try to get anywhere from 7 to 10 hours of sleep each night. The ideal for most healthy adults is eight hours.
Go to bed at the same time and wake up at the same time every night. This will make you feel much more rested.
Spend at least half an hour reading in bed and winding down before you go to bed. Shut off the TV, your computer, and any other visual stimulants at least an hour before bed.
Take catnaps during the day. They can help you recharge your batteries and boost your memory.
Your brain also consolidates information into your long-term memory bank during sleep. If you stay awake, this process won't be able to happen.

How to Have an Out of Body Experience

Be The First To Comment
 Image titled 79173 18
Do you want to float around the astral plane without dying first? Are you longing to leave your body at home for a few hours to explore the cosmos? People report out-of-body experiences (OBEs) while dreaming, during near-death experiences, or through relaxation techniques such as meditation. For some people, having an OBE can be like being Alice in your very own Wonderland. Read on to learn how to experience this on purpose.
Edit
Steps

Image titled Have an Out of Body Experience Step 1
    1
Ready your mind and body. Choose a quiet place you find relaxing. You can be indoors or outdoors, as long as you are comfortable. Make sure you won't be interrupted. OBEs are most common in the morning at 4:00am-6:00am, however trying this at night or when you are tired will probably just make you fall asleep.
Image titled Have an Out of Body Experience Step 2
    2
Find a comfortable position, either sitting or lying down. Many people choose to lie down on their backs, but be forewarned that temporary sleep paralysis is more likely in this position if you do fall asleep. These may consist of dark figures, ghosts or whatever you fear entering your room. Though this may sound scary, the more you realise they cannot physically harm you for they are your mind's creation, the less scary it is to endure.
Image titled Have an Out of Body Experience Step 3
    3
Affirm to yourself that you are going to have an out-of-body experience. Say to yourself "Mind awake-Body Asleep" or "I will have a lucid dream." Repeat this several times until it is the only thought left in your mind.
Image titled Have an Out of Body Experience Step 4
    4
Close your eyes and relax. Become less conscious of your external surroundings. Empty your mind of thoughts and ideas. Meditation techniques can be helpful here to maintain an empty mind while still remaining focused and aware.
Image titled Have an Out of Body Experience Step 5
    5
Allow yourself to almost fall asleep. Actually sleeping would defeat the purpose. Instead, let yourself drift close to sleep while concentrating on being conscious of your sensations and mental state.

Method 1
Edit
Controlling Your Vibrations

Image titled Have an Out of Body Experience Step 6
    1
Feel a vibrating sensation in your body. As you relax further, you should become more aware of what's happening inside your mind and body than anything happening in the room around you. Try to feel the vibration of your body, coming from both the larger pulse of your blood and breath to the individual movements of your cells. You may think you hear sounds like a tornado/wind. The urge to move here will be tremendous, especially if it's your first time. Just relax deeper and deeper until the sounds passes, but avoid falling asleep.
Image titled Have an Out of Body Experience Step 7
    2
Try to slow the vibration. Visualize the movements of your body slowing and the sounds and sensations of vibrations getting fainter. Soon everything will be completely silent and your body will be still.
Image titled Have an Out of Body Experience Step 8
    3
Let your body become paralyzed. Some say it feels like a lead blanket has been placed over you. You may notice all of a sudden that you can't move your arms or legs. Don't panic! If you try to force yourself to move you may wake up. You will, however, be able to move your eyes, mouth, nose, and face, so try moving those slightly instead.

Method 2
Edit
Leaving Your Body With the Rope Approach

Image titled Have an Out of Body Experience Step 9
    1
Feel your hands grasping an invisible rope. Don't move your actual hands or visualize the rope. The "rope method" relies on the imaginary feeling of the rope, not a mental image. Focus on the texture, thickness and heftiness of the rope. Feel the tension in your arms between the strength of the rope and the pull of your weight.[1]
If you have trouble using the rope technique, try imagining a ladder instead. Some people find this easier, especially if they are more accustomed to climbing ladders than ropes.
Image titled Have an Out of Body Experience Step 10
    2
Use the rope to pull yourself up and start climbing. Feel your muscles contract and your body move upward when you pull. Don't visualize: imagine you are doing this in pure darkness. Keep going up. Soon you will find yourself out of your body, triggering the "projection reflex."
If you experience vibrations in your body as you climb, try to relax more, or else you will only lose more energy and it will become harder.
If you have trouble, try climbing up as you inhale and then resting as you exhale.
The rope method is a more practical variation on the more iconic technique of visualizing yourself floating up. Though floating out of one's body all at once makes for a better image in the movies, it's not as effective in real life.
Image titled Have an Out of Body Experience Step 11
    3
Open your astral eyes. Once you know you are out of your body, open your eyes. You should be viewing your room from the side of your bed, with your body still lying there still with eyes closed.
If you want, try to open your third eye first, low on the center of your forehead.

Method 3
Edit
Leaving Your Body Using the Point-Shift Approach

Image titled Have an Out of Body Experience Step 12
    1
Visualize every detail of the space around you. Make sure you get a good look at your surroundings before you lie down. Now try to recall and feel the location and shape of every object in the room, as it looks from where you are resting.[2]
Image titled Have an Out of Body Experience Step 13
    2
Visualize the space around you as seen from a different point in the room. Once you have the image of the room clear in your mind's eye, shift that perspective to try to see that image as though you were standing over or near your body. In some ways you should already feel like you have left your body.
Image titled Have an Out of Body Experience Step 14
    3
Rise from your body to the spot you were visualizing from. Stay very relaxed, but be forceful in your will to gently bring yourself to that point. Feel yourself moving up and over to that space, and visualize your perspective changing. Then open your astral eyes.

Method 4
Edit
Leaving Your Body Using the Interrupted Sleep Approach

       1
Set an alarm clock for the middle of your sleep cycle.

    2
When it goes off, shut off and lay back and relax.
This can be done in a comfortable chair, also.

    3
Try to feel the sensation of 'falling' very close to sleep then mentally 'pull' yourself back awake. Try to feel falling into the mattress as you near sleep, then pull yourself back up to near awake.

    4
Repeat as you attempt to get very close to sleep then back to near awake. Eventually when you pull yourself back to nearly awake, you will actually pull yourself up, out of your body.

How to Stop Thinking About Scary Things

Be The First To Comment
Image titled Stop Thinking About Scary Things Step 21
Fear is your brain's pre-programmed response to something scary.[1] It is completely natural for a spooky thought or image to be imprinted in your head, and make it hard for you to sleep. Small amounts of fear are positive for your health, but when it takes over it can interfere with your peace and happiness. Whether you're afraid because of a movie, a natural disaster, or even spiders, there are ways of coping.
Method 1
Edit
Distracting Yourself

Image titled Stop Thinking About Scary Things Step 1
    1
Watch a comedy movie. The human brain will remember recent images best. Having a good laugh can help by "overwriting" the memory of your scary thoughts.[2]
You could also watch a light-hearted television show.
Image titled Stop Thinking About Scary Things Step 2
    2
Do something relaxing. Paint your nails, give yourself a spa day, or just go and hang out with your friends. A large process of unwinding from feelings of fear is by relaxing your mind. Take a relaxing bath. This will soak your mind into a state of meditation. Try setting the mood with candles and bath soaps for better relaxation.[3]
Image titled Stop Thinking About Scary Things Step 3
    3
Read a light-hearted book. Focusing on the lighter subject material in the book, even for a little while, will help distract your thoughts from those that have been scaring you. You could even read a book that is meant for younger audiences.
Image titled Stop Thinking About Scary Things Step 4
    4
Do something artistic. If you like coloring then you should draw! Make something you enjoy. Doing art can even help channel your scary thoughts into something expressive. The creative process is known to cause happiness.[4]
You could even write a poem if you enjoy writing.
Image titled Stop Thinking About Scary Things Step 5

Listen to music. You can listen to anything that you enjoy. Classic rock or the latest pop song should get you going. For even better results, try dancing for fun to the music.[5]

Treat yourself. Go out and get some take-out food or have a pizza delivered to your house. Satisfying your palate releases serotonin into your brain. This is a chemical process that happens in your brain which causes happy feelings.

Think about something mundane. Think about what happened that was funny today. Think about how small you are in this world. Try zoom outside yourself up into space where you are simply a small dot on a series of larger dots. Your fear might feel irrelevant afterwards.

Picture a place you feel safe. Clear your mind of unwanted images by filling it with images you do want. Think about the last time you went to Disneyland. If you have access to photographs of one of these times, then look at them and put yourself back into that environment. Remember the sights, sounds, smells, and the warm feeling of being safe.

Practice a light exercise. A good way of cleansing your emotional state is by exerting yourself physically.[7] You don't need to go to the gym. Simply do a quick weightless exercise:
        10 reps of push-ups
        30 reps of crunches
        20 jumping jacks
Rest for five minutes and repeat

Play a sport with friends. This activity should help you twice as much. You are surrounding yourself with people and exerting yourself physically. Try whatever sport you like to play with your friends, whether it's football, soccer, basketball, or whatever.

Practice Yoga. Yoga requires you to control your breathing and send it to different parts of the body. Doing this as a way of coping with scary things, can be very therapeutic. Going to a yoga class will improve your technique and help center yourself into a peaceful environment.
If you're unable to go to a yoga class, try doing some simple yoga moves at home.

Managing Your Fear

    1
Examine what's scaring you. Take some time to determine what it is that is scaring you. A lot of time people know exactly what is scaring them, but others are unclear what the root of their fear is. Try writing out a list of thoughts that are troubling you.

Take deep breaths. Relaxing your mood is an important step into reaching a more peaceful state. Hysterical moods are not healthy and can even further your state of fear. A good way to calm yourself is to take deep breathes. You'll want to be calm in order to better face what is scaring you.

Ask yourself questions. Write out a few questions, reflect on them, and try to fill in a response. Try these questions:
        What am I afraid of?
        Is this realistic?
What is the worst that could happen?
Where do I feel fear in my body?[9]

Draw what's scaring you. If you have a tangible fear like a character from a horror movie, a spider, or whatnot, try drawing it. You can print out an image from the internet and try to draw it. Spending a prolonged period of time with your phobia will help you get past feeling afraid of it.[10]

Expose yourself. Avoiding what is scaring you can take on a worse outcome than your initial feelings of fear. Before seeking outside help, stand up to your fear and welcome it. It will be challenging, but doing this could help you place things into perspective.[11]

Be patient. Dealing with your fear can take a long time to truly overcome, but with persistent work, you can overcome it. Rely on a simple set of exercises to solve your issue: patience, persistence, education, and being committed.[12]

Seek professional help. If you find these thoughts to persist you may need extra help from a professional. Some fears aren't caused by a scary movie, but rather caused from an unknown source about something irrational. This type of fear is better treated with medicine or support from a therapist.
