While visiting The Cage in St. Osyth, Essex, England, 55 year-old Chris Halton captured this image, which he believes shows three ghostly hooded figure carrying off the body of a witch. During the Elizabethan era, The Cage was used as a prison for witches.
Up until it’s closure in the early 20th century, a total of 14 women who were accused of being witches were imprisoned inside the house. It is now believed to be one of the most haunted houses in Britain.
Chris, who retired to investigate ghosts full-time, says he left the property around midnight and made his way down Coffin Alley, which is where the bodies of the accused witches were carried away when they died.
“The alley was really dark and completely empty. It was very creepy, silent and still as there was no traffic or people about.” Chris told the Daily Mail. “I just took a couple of pictures with the flash on just to document it like I had throughout the house.”
“As soon as I looked at one of them I saw there was some light distortion on it but I just thought it was something wrong on the picture. It was when I got home and looked at it properly that I saw the clear shape of a hooded figure wearing Elizabethan clothing and carrying a stretcher.”
“I was shocked. I have seen a lot of ghost pictures but it is very rare that anything significant is caught on camera. This was quite extraordinary. There was definitely no one there when I took the picture.“
“I think they are residual apparitions, replays of an event that happened a long time ago, which is why they didn’t see or interact with me.” Chris said. “The reaction I have had from people was mainly astonishment - though some were shocked and even terrified by it. It is a remarkable picture and a chance moment. The odds of capturing something like that are very slim.”
Some speculate that the picture was taken with either a long exposure or a slow shutter speed, which may have caused some lights in he distance to come out looking like ghostly figures.
However, others believe the photo does show an actual group of spirits, especially since the house is said to be haunted by the spirit of Usula Kemp, who was one of the 14 accused witches imprisoned at The Cage.
What do you think? Are the figures seen in this photo actual spirits? Or is there a more conventional explanation?
