Ever since Twilight
by Stephanie Meyer, vampire novels have been cropping up everywhere. It
seems that people think teens will read anything! It also seems that
people think that by barely changing the plot of another story, they can
make a novel. Here's how to do it and make your novel stand out in the
Young Adult Genre.
Steps
-
1Have an idea. This can be the entire plot outlined in your head, or just a scene of your characters on the couch together. At this stage in the process, you don't need to know what is going to happen, just a general feeling of what the characters are going to do.
-
2Develop your plot. You can do this in different ways, it really depends on the kind of writer you are. However, some way or another, get your ideas down on paper. Figure out what is going to happen in your novel and what the big picture is. For some authors this can mean writing down everything to the smallest detail, or just getting the general picture.
-
3Step back and make it your own. Before you start writing, look at your story and make sure it is completely your idea. Sometimes we can trick ourselves into thinking that we're being original, when really we got the idea from a movie we saw last week. Paranormal romance is cool, but make it your own! Don't have vampires or werewolves; or if you do, make it different! Make your characters all shape shift into monkeys or something! Do something that makes you stand out from the crowd!
-
4Remember who you are writing for. If you are writing for yourself, feel free to write what ever you want. But, keep in mind if you are writing for a larger audience such as the general public, dropping the f-bomb every few sentences isn't probably the best idea. If you are looking for a hit, it needs to be something that teachers feel comfortable reading in their classroom, such as The Hunger Games, or at least something that parents would be okay with their kids reading if your novel did became famous.
-
5Start the writing process. This is probably the hardest part of the making of your novel. Different writers have different techniques, such as starting at the middle and writing to the end and then coming back and writing the beginning. You may encounter writers block, but remember, that is just a state of mind. Push through it. Even if you only get a few paragraphs a day, you are still getting somewhere.
-
6Think long and hard about your romance. Make it sappy in some parts, but not too much. You want there to be a definite vibe of romance, but not so much it feels cheesy. In some parts of Twilight, for example, when Edward is proclaiming his love to Bella it seems very sappy and unnatural. The important thing to think about here is to make it real.
-
7Don't be afraid to let your plot change. As you may have heard before, characters almost take on minds of their own when you are writing. If your plot goes in a completely different direction, just go with it and see where it takes you. If it ends up that it kills off all your characters and you can't have that since you were planning a sequel, you can always edit it out.
-
8Revise and edit when you are finished. Sometimes you will put together your rough draft, or first draft and it will hardly need many changes (unlikely, but possible). Sometimes you will end up changing your plot or characters and will need to do more drafts. Basically editing is when you fine tune your novel, looking for misspelled words and punctuation errors, and revising is when you read your novel to yourself, taking out any parts you don't want and adding to scenes that need more.
-
9Do what you wish with your finished novel! This may mean getting an agent and sending it off to editors, or just reading and sharing with family and friends. Either way, pat yourself on the back for this major accomplishment!Source : wikihow.com
